What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is an ancient medical healing art which has been used for over 2,500 years based on the belief that health is determined by a balanced flow of Qi or Chi, the vital life energy present in all living organisms. This energy is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways (meridians). Health is maintained, but once the energy pathways are blocked, pain and illness occur as the result of a disrupted free flow of Qi.

Through acupuncture, body, mind, spirit balance can be restored with the insertion of hair thin sterile disposable needles at specific points on energetic pathways mapped on the body through which Qi flows (similar to the mapping of vessels and nerves in the body), accessing Qi to stimulate the person’s own self-healing ability.

Beneficial effects of Acupuncture
  • Acupuncture triggers the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers to suppress the pain (of course), relax muscles and reduce stress.

  • It reduces the inflammation, swelling and muscle spasms.

  • It breaks up stagnations from trauma and other causes.

  • It strengthens the immune system.

  • It activates and stimulates the healing process.

  • It improves the functioning of gastrointestinal and digestive system.

  • To the endocrine systems, it affects sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.

  • And it also positively affects the nervous system, helping the body to achieve a state of balance, or homeostasis.
